GROVE CITY ROTARY CLUB’S POLIO PLUS INITIATIVE

Rotarians around the world embraced polio eradication through the Polio Plus program – which started as an idea from one, single Rotarian and became a worldwide effort. For the past 25 years, Rotarians and our partners have worked to administer the vaccine in every country and put an end to this crippling disease.

While polio was eliminated in the United States decades ago, it still exists in 2012. Last year India, long a country with a torrent of polio cases effecting thousands of children, announced it hasn’t had a new case reported in an entire year.

Polio is now an epidemic only in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Nigeria.  Polio has plummeted since 1988, when the disease infected about 350,000 of the world’s children every year.  As of September of this year, there were 134 global cases of polio in 2012, which compares with 364 for the same period in 2011.

Rotary is committed to this cause and that includes the members of the Grove City Rotary Club.  In October Rotary International announced its plans to contribute $75 million over three years to the Global Polio Eradication Initiative as part of a world-free effort to close the $945 million funding gap. Your TAX DEDUCTIBLE contribution, and our Club’s $500 match, will help close that gap.

Our international service organization has raised over $1 billion dollars, through the efforts of Rotarians and supporters in more than 200 counties. Rotary and its partners have reached more than 2.5 billion children with the oral polio vaccine, preventing more than 5 million cases of paralysis and hundreds of thousands of pediatric deaths.  If eradication fails and polio rebounds, up to 200,000 children a year could be paralyzed.

Please contribute as much as you can. Any amount is greatly appreciated. You will receive an email receipt of your contribution for your records.

Please “LIKE” us on Facebook and Share this initiative with your friends and family today! Look for more facts about Rotary’s efforts to eradicate polio on Facebook throughout the month of December.

THANK YOU!!
